The Alaska Wildlife Alliance (AWA) is recruiting for a Communications and Media Consultant to help raise public awareness of wildlife issues in Alaska. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and basic knowledge of Alaska’s wildlife issues with prior experience in outreach and/or communications. This is a remote, 20 – 25 hours per week contract position, with preference for the consultant to be based anywhere in Alaska.
Responsibilities Overview: At a minimum, the Communications and Media Consultant will be expected to manage AWA’s social media and website (with content direction from the Director and Deputy Director); manage digital fundraising campaigns and education campaigns; write and distribute the monthly newsletter; prepare the annual report; organize the annual wildlife photo contest and create the calendar; assist with organizing the annual fundraising event; and prepare and distribute communications about membership.
Responsibilities:
- Develop educational and promotional materials
- Lead all social media content development, to include development of standard posts, reels, and short videos for sharing on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Expectation of 3-5 posts per week
- Create content for and improve AWA’s website
- Write blogs, articles, and news stories about upcoming or contentious Alaska wildlife issues for the purposes of garnering public participation and support
- Draft monthly newsletters highlighting recent and upcoming AWA activities and AK wildlife issues
- Design end of year annual report highlighting AWA accomplishments, future plans, and recognition of donors
- Conduct research and develop species and issues factsheets
- Support the development of press releases and conduct outreach to news and media sources
- Solicit AK wildlife images for, and develop, the annual calendar
- Identify opportunities and low-cost options for organizational swag (e.g., stickers, clothing, masks)
- Create print and digital advertising materials for events
- Develop a communications plan with key demographics
- Support planning, advertising, and executing fundraising events (annual fundraiser; various smaller scale fundraising events throughout the year)
Qualifications: Candidates should have demonstrated experience in at least one of the following fields: outreach, education, or communications. Experience with social media platforms and a strong interest in the mission of AWA and wildlife issues in Alaska are required. Familiarity with Alaska is required, and candidates who have lived/are living in Alaska are preferred. Experience with Squarespace, Mailchimp or Constant Contact, and Canva are preferred. Additionally, candidates with photography and videography experience, as well as drone pilot credentials are strongly encouraged to apply.
Compensation: This is a remote, consultant (20-25 hours/week) contract position with no benefits. Compensation will be hourly, and depending upon the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate, in the range of $20-$30/hour. The successful candidate will be hired as an independent contractor and must have access to the technological requirements of a remote position (reliable internet, computer, phone, transportation, etc.). The Communications and Media Consultant reports directly to the Executive Director, and may work closely with the Deputy Director and members of the Board of Directors. Hours per week are flexible – AWA encourages an adaptive work schedule to allow for other contracts or student activities, as well as time outdoors enjoying the wildlife and habitat we work to protect.
