Overview
We are looking for two enthusiastic individuals to join the Diagnostic Lab (at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory in Charlotte, NC) for six months (approx. May-October 2024). The Diagnostic Lab services all Bartlett offices in North America (140+), evaluating over 13,000 plant samples each year. The Diagnostic Lab is also a member of the National Plant Diagnostic Network of state and federal diagnostic labs and is a major contributor of diagnoses to the National Data Repository.
The interns will assist with unpacking, sorting, and checking in samples, processing plant material and testing it via serological (ELISA) and molecular (DNA extraction and PCR) means, and general lab tasks like cleaning, autoclaving, and media preparation. A strong understanding of scientific principles and lab techniques is required. The interns will have the opportunity to participate in various experiences (tree climbing, plant problem walks, drone flying, etc.) as well as learning about arboriculture, ornamental plant problem diagnosis, the use of various diagnostic testing methods, working within a team, and much more.
TITLE: Diagnostic Lab Intern
REPORTS TO: Diagnostic Lab staff
PAY: $18/hr, 40 hrs/wk
Responsibilities
DIAGNOSTIC LAB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Learns, understands, and adheres to all lab safety protocols and company safety policies
- Opens, sorts, and logs in samples received by mail daily
- Receives training in order to assist with:
- Washing and visual analysis of root samples
- Preparation of various plant tissue samples for ELISA, DNA extraction, and PCR testing
- Performing ELISA, Berkeleyomyces, and molecular testing (with supervision) when needed
- Makes and pours various types of culture media
- Autoclaves plant and culture waste materials
- Washes dishes and performs other lab cleaning tasks
- Provides a weekly report of activities to technicians and lab manager
MISCELLANEOUS:
- A short research project may be available based on interest/experience
- Interest in photography is a plus
- Communication and organizational skills are critical
Qualifications
- Have earned or are working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in plant science, arboriculture, forestry, or a related discipline
