Job Summary:
The Equity and Equal Opportunity Investigator (“EEO Investigator”) / Senior Equity and Equal Opportunity Investigator (“Sr EEO Investigator”) in the Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity (“OEEO”) reports to the Associate Vice President for Equity and Equal Opportunity (“AVP EEO”) and will be responsible for investigating reports of discrimination based on protected class and for conducting discrimination prevention training. The EEO Investigator will have direct oversight from the AVP EEO, while the Sr. EEO Investigator will exercise independent judgment with minimal direct oversight.
This position will support the OEEO’s mission of promoting fairness and justice, ensuring that each member of the Miami University community is and feels included, and will foster a diverse and welcoming environment that is equally accessible for all who live, learn, work, and participate in activities at Miami University.
Duties/Physical Demands:
EEO Investigator:
– With assistance and oversight from the AVP EEO, conduct discrimination investigations based on protected class status involving faculty, staff, students, and visitors, as well as sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence investigations involving employees. This includes, but is not limited to: interviewing witnesses; fact-finding; drawing reasonable conclusions; keeping accurate and thorough records and notes; and issuing a report at the conclusion of each investigation.
– Oversee and conduct in-person discrimination prevention education and training, including sexual misconduct, interpersonal violence, and duty to report training.
– Assess and revise related online and in-person training content.
– Assist with managing the online discrimination training program.
– Occasionally testify during disciplinary proceedings.
– Assist AVP EEO in revising OEEO webpage content, as needed.
– Attend meetings as appropriate.
– Travel to regional campuses, conferences, and training opportunities as appropriate.
– Other duties as assigned.
Sr EEO Investigator:
– Manage the daily responsibilities associated with conducting discrimination investigations based on protected class status involving faculty, staff, students, and visitors, as well as sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence investigations involving employees. This includes, but is not limited to: interviewing witnesses; fact-finding; drawing reasonable conclusions; keeping accurate and thorough records and notes; and issuing a report at the conclusion of each investigation.
– Continuously identify and integrate best practices regarding harassment and discrimination investigations.
– Oversee and conduct in-person discrimination prevention education and training, including sexual misconduct, interpersonal violence, and duty to report training.
– Assess and revise related online and in-person training content.
– Assist with managing the online discrimination training program.
– Occasionally testify during disciplinary proceedings.
– Assist AVP EEO in the revision of policy language and OEEO webpage content, as needed.
– Attend weekly Title IX meetings and other meetings as appropriate.
– Travel to regional campuses, conferences, and training opportunities as appropriate.
– Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
For consideration as an EEO Investigator:
– Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies, sociology, psychology, criminal justice, human resource management, or other appropriate field and three (3) years of experience conducting investigations;
OR
– Master’s degree in paralegal studies, sociology, psychology, criminal justice, human resource management, or other appropriate field and one (1) year of experience conducting investigations;
OR
– Juris Doctor.
– Experience conducting training.
– Related experience gained during the completion of degree programs may be counted towards these requirements.
For consideration as a Sr EEO Investigator:
– Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies sociology, psychology, criminal justice, human resource management, or other appropriate field and four (4) years of experience conducting investigations;
OR
– Master’s degree in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, human resource management, or other appropriate field and two (2) years of experience conducting investigations;
OR
– Juris Doctor and either one (1) year of experience conducting investigations or two (2) years of legal practice experience.
– Experience conducting training.
– Related experience gained during the completion of degree programs may be counted towards these requirements.
Desired Qualifications:
EO Investigator:
– Experience conducting discrimination investigations in a higher education setting.
– Experience conducting harassment and discrimination prevention training in a higher education setting.
Sr EEO Investigator:
– Three (3) years of experience conducting discrimination investigations in a higher education setting.
– Two (2) years of experience conducting harassment and discrimination prevention training in a higher education setting.
– Experience managing online harassment and discrimination prevention training programs.
– Experience using Maxient case management software.
– Experience working with faculty, staff, students, and community members in a higher education setting.
– Working knowledge of non-discrimination regulations, including, but not limited to Title VI, Title VII, and Title IX.
