Who: Learn how to farm! The Center for Land-Based Learning’s West Sacramento Urban Farm Program seeks 3-5 interns to help run Riverfront Farm. The 1/3 acre farm site is the fifth farm site of an expanding program in which vacant lots within the city of West Sacramento are being converted into urban farm business incubators. Sales via a Mobile Market will launch in the Summer with the objective of increasing food security in low-income areas of West Sac. Produce grown is also distributed through Yolo Food Bank, on-site farm stand sales, and to nearby restaurants.
What: Intern duties will vary throughout the season but will entail tasks such as:
● washing and packing produce
● assistance with sales at the Mobile Market if interested
● and other general farm work
● Help with community engagement events may also be available for those interested in helping develop the Urban Farm Program.
Interested candidates can also choose to get involved in our Mobile Farmers Market. As produce becomes available we will pilot our Mobile Farmers Market Truck. This mobile market will strive to get as much fresh produce grown by the urban farms to community members who need it most. Interested intern(s) would be responsible for set up, selling and breakdown of the mobile market each week working with our Program Coordinator throughout. An interest in communicating with the public, attention to detail and general interest in urban farming is required. Interest in nutrition, encouraging folks to try something new, and possibly lead some cooking demos would be open for those with a desire to gain experience in food access work.
When: Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis starting in April. Positions on the farm will start in June and close in November. Mobile market positions will start July and run through October.
Hours can be anywhere from 5-20+ hours per week and can be scheduled with some flexibility. A 6-week minimum commitment is required as well as personal transportation needed to get to the farm site. The farm is accessible via bike routes from Sacramento and West Sacramento.
Farming workdays are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 7am-1pm. Mobile Farmers Market Days are Tuesdays and Thursdays, hours tbd.
Where: Riverfront Farm is located next to Drakes Brewing at 985 Riverfront Street West Sacramento
How: A willingness to learn, ability to work independently and attention to detail is a MUST. Our farm operates as a small business and we take pride in the quality of our work and the product we provide to our community. We work in all weather conditions. Interested candidates must be ready for physically demanding work in heat, rain, wind and smoke (wearing n-95’s).
