Senator Merkley’s office offers Winter and Spring internships for college students, recent graduates, and others looking to gain experience working with Senate office. There are a limited number of scholarships available to those seeking financial support for the opportunity. Individuals from all majors and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The office is happy to work with colleges or institutions to allow students to earn academic credit during their internships. Full- and part-time internships are available.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, until further notice, Senator Merkley’s office is offering 100% remote internships, as well as hybrid internships for those located in Washington, DC, and will offer in-person opportunities and internships depending on the status of the Coronavirus and staffing.
Legislative Internships are matched based on policy interest and experience with legislative team members who work in specific policy areas. Interns are often called upon to attend virtual briefings and meetings, write memos, and draft constituent correspondence. Interns also provide administrative and day-to-day support for the office.
Press internships offer a unique opportunity to work with members of a congressional communications team. Responsibilities of a press intern include preparing press clippings, conducting research, updating the web site, drafting press materials, and performing a variety of administrative tasks.
