Now Hiring – Summer Hotel Jobs for College & High School Students
What kinds of jobs are you hiring for?
If you are interested in gaining hands-on experience working in the hotel/hospitality industry, this is the opportunity for you! We are hiring college and high school-age team members to assist in all areas throughout the hotel. Our “Summer Crew” works daily to clean and prepare guest rooms, prepare “Grab n Go” breakfast bags, and help with a variety of operational duties. With our Summer Crew team members, we stay flexible with job duties and work as a crew to clean the guest rooms, prepare for incoming guests, handle linen/stocking/laundry, and work in basic service-type jobs.
What would I be doing each day?
Every day is a little bit different inside a hotel. We sort and wash laundry, run linen to the floors, stock carts/shelves, make beds, remove trash, vacuum, mop, clean guest rooms and common areas of the hotel. We prep “Grab-n-Go” breakfast bags, clear tables, unload orders from suppliers, and stock the serving counter. Sometimes we work outside on the landscaping, sweeping the sidewalks, and cleaning the outdoor spaces. We answer phones, help people with directions or recommendations for places to eat and landmarks to visit. You may be trained to make reservations, and help to check-in and check-out guests.
How old do I need to be to work in a hotel?
We adhere to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Youth Rules Initiative that promotes positive and safe work experiences for young workers. Early work experiences can be rewarding for young workers while providing great opportunities to learn important skills. We believe we are developing the next generation of workers and understand that young staff new to the workforce need some extra assistance.
16- and 17-year-olds can work in any hotel position for any number of hours. They are likely to be working with a crew but as they gain skills and become versed in the jobs, they will begin to take lead positions and work independently.
Once a youth reaches 18 years of age they can work any job, any hours so we work to make sure they are in a position that utilizes their skills and supports the team.
Who would I be working with?
We like to pair new team members with a veteran worker who can show you the ropes. There are department leads at the Front Desk, Housekeeping, and Maintenance. The General Manager and Assistant General Manager will be mentors to help you as well.
How much do I get paid?
Our Summer Crew hires will make at least $14 per hour to start and will have opportunities to advance in wage and responsibility based on performance.
How many hours can I work?
During the summer, when school is no longer in session, all of our employees may work up to 40 hours of regular time and are eligible for overtime after 40 hours. Our weeks run from Sunday to Saturday so we schedule depending on how busy the hotel will be. You may request to work as many hours as you want, up to 40 hours. The hotel is sold-out most weekends during the summer, so there are more hours/shifts available on the weekends. Summer hires may also have opportunities to stay on for evening, weekend, holiday and on-call positions throughout the year.
Do I have to work weekends?
The short answer to that is, “Yes.” Our business runs 365 days a year and weekends/holidays can be our busiest days. We tend to give high priority in scheduling to staff members with the most flexible schedules. That said, we all enjoy time with family and friends and understand the desire to have some free weekends. We will work to find schedules that benefit both the business and the staff. Share your summer plans and preferred schedules with the team when you meet at your interview.
How do I know my schedule?
The work schedule is posted weekly. We use an online payroll program for our schedules, time off requests, and all things related to our employment. During your onboarding, you will learn how to get access, place time-off requests, view your schedule and see your paychecks.
What do I wear to work?
We wear black pants, a company provided work shirt, socks, and black shoes or sneakers. We will assign you a uniform shirt. Comfort, durability, and professionalism is key in our appearance so we ask that you keep your attire clean and without holes, stains, or attention-drawing fit. We also like a nice clean haircut, ponytail, clean-shaven face, and no excessive jewelry.
