In accordance with Washoe County School District policies, provides basic first aid, including wound care, care of soft tissue or head injuries, and application of ice packs or simple dressings, to injured students. In the event of a life-threatening emergency on campus, initiates standard rescue measures, such as CPR, and contacts 911/Emergency Medical Services.
Under the supervision of the school nurse, performs delegable procedures such as assistance with student medications, clean, intermittent catheterization, diabetes care, and diapering and toileting students with special health care needs. Refers students to the school nurse as necessary and follows the policies and procedures of the Student Health Services Department.
Cleans and disinfects the clinic cots, instruments and equipment, and ensures safe storage of medication and clinic supplies. Maintains accurate records of clinic visits and care given to students. Prior to leaving the assignment, creates a brief, written summary report of pertinent information for the school’s regularly assigned clinical aide.
Education/Experience: Any education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
1. Equivalent to a high school diploma;
2. Any related experience that would demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the necessary duties.
Knowledge of: Behavior and characteristics of students is desirable; cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures; emergency and first aid procedures; current office methods; basic computer methods; files and records management; and telephone etiquette.
Skill at: Administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation; rendering first aid to injured and ill students; preparing and maintaining accurate and complete records, files and reports; dealing tactfully with students, parents, and school personnel on health issues; applying specific laws, rules and office policies and procedures; reading, writing and speaking English at a level required for successful job performance; working quickly and effectively in stressful and emergency situations; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a current Health Care Provider Card from the American Heart Association; possession of a current Standard First Aid card.
