The Climate Communications Intern at NPCA (National Parks Conservation Association) plays a crucial role in supporting the organization’s national portfolio, particularly in securing park funding and addressing the challenges posed by climate change. This position requires a commitment of approximately 10 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
Supporting climate communications projects: Work closely with Inflation Reduction Act experts on a communications campaign highlighting projects which prepare parks for climate change’s short- and long-term effects. Assist in research for producing materials such as copy, video assets, social media content and research related to National Park Service projects.
Assisting with climate disaster research: Aid in research efforts related to climate disasters, especially as the organization anticipates more frequent and severe weather events during the summer. This includes responding to timely media requests and providing relevant information.
Collaborating on national park funding success projects: Work closely with Government Affairs experts to research efforts related to funding. Help identify target media outlets, develop communication assets highlighting key park projects and support the drafting and release of press statements and communications materials in key media markets.
Innovating climate change communications tools within NPCA. Aid in producing climate communications toolkit to advance NPCA’s staff in climate literacy, education, and outreach.
Daily media clip collection and distribution: Assist in the collection and distribution of NPCA’s daily media clips. Additionally, help develop media lists for targeted press outreach.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current or recent college graduate (within 1 year of graduation)
- Strong interest in environmental conservation, climate change, and national parks advocacy.
- Excellent research skills with the ability to gather and analyze information from various sources.
- Proficiency in social media platforms and familiarity with video production tools is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Prior experience in communications, public relations, or related fields preferred but not required.
