The City of Albany, Oregon, has one opening for the summer of 2024 for Seasonal Stormwater Internship to assist in managing the City’s stormwater program. Work will consist of minor facility maintenance, collecting field data, data analysis and reporting of storm outfall inventory (Outfall Reconnaissance Inventory (ORI)), as part of the City’s Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) program. The City’s stormwater management program is part of the State of Oregon’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) MS4 Phase II permit program.
Responsibilities:
- Lift manhole lids, storm sewer grates, etc. weighing at least 50 lbs.
- Assist in maintenance of stormwater facilities, using hand and power tools.
- Safely wade in streams and storm channels, traverse stream, and creek banks.
- Navigate difficult terrain including creeks, streams, up and down stream banks, etc.
- Be exposed to harsh environments (nuisance plants, heat, rain, insects) for extended periods of time.
- Perform dry weather inspections for non-stormwater flows.
- Assist in the implementation of MS4 and TMDL programs.
- Data entry.
- Perform duties as necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.
- Comply with Safety Requirements including wearing proper safety equipment as required by OSHA and City policy.
- Understand and read blueprints/as-built drawings for storm sewer, sanitary and water systems.
- Effective oral and written communication and record keeping.
- Drive a City truck and haul trailers.

Qualifications:
- Must be accepted with intent to enroll or enrolled in a full time College or University program. Preferred major in Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, Urban Studies/planning, Geography, GIS, Biology, Chemistry, Hydrology/Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Engineering, or other science field.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to successfully complete a post-offer substance abuse test and background investigation.
Period of Employment: This is a temporary position, 40 hours max per week, not to exceed 12 weeks. Start and end date are between June 1 and September 30, 2024.
You can expect a weekly workload ranging between 30-40 hours/week. The work schedule is weekday, but also will include occasional early morning starts. All work performed during daylight hours.
Compensation– $17-$20/hour dependent on skills and experience
75% of the time you will be in the field, supporting your field team in performing dry weather field screening, outfall reconnaissance inventory tasks and maintaining stormwater quality facilities.
You will be extensively using environmental mapping tools such as topographic maps, digital maps, mapping software and database applications. Training will be provided, but familiarity and interest in ArcGIS software, Google Earth, and spatial analysis will make you stand out!
25% of the time you will spend in the office, where you will assist the team in reporting your findings from the fieldwork. If you have some experience with technical writing and GIS, be ready to showcase it during your interview! You will acquire a good understanding of Federal and State stormwater and environmental regulations pertaining to this type of work, but if you are already familiar with them, this would be a big plus to your application. Organizational skills and excellent attention to detail are highly desired!
