The successful candidate must be available to begin work in late May to early June for program planning & be able to work the entire duration of the program through the summer months (approximately 13-weeks). The position has a variable hour work schedule, up to 25 hours per week.
This position is responsible for creating, implementing and leading a traveling summer playground program at various park sites; must be able to work as a team with other assigned staff and also independently with little supervision. Will perform and oversee the daily operations and activities, which include planning and leading organized games, arts & crafts, guests, and special events. Develops positive, supportive relationships with participants, parents, the public and other department staff. Conducts oneself in a professional manner that represents the City well; be involved and engaged in program & activities with the participants; prepare information and promotional materials that promote the program and activities; responsible for inventory and tracking of equipment and supplies; maintaining records, attendance sheets and preparing reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ability to create and develop weekly program themes and activities.
- Responsibly for developing the weekly agendas.
- Work within an established line-item budget.
- Create staff schedules, conduct staff training.
- Prepare information and promotional materials that promote the program and activities.
- Work with youth between ages of 4-12 in a positive manner.
- Interact professionally with participants and other employees.
- Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
- Set-up and tear down of program equipment and supplies.
- Ability to lead programs and activities.
- Responsible for inventory and tracking of equipment and supplies.
- Maintaining records and preparing reports.
- Timely and regular attendance.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Follow/adhere to all city policies and procedures, and safety program regulations and requirements.
Ability to:

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is primarily performed outside in varying weather conditions for extended periods. Must be able to lift/carry at least 40lbs. May be required to stand for extended periods of time. Work involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. The work frequently requires speaking or hearing, using hands to handle or feel items and repetitive motions.
Education and Experience:
Note: Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- One year of college course work in recreation, education or related field preferred.
- One year experience working with youth and leading youth activities and programs preferred.
Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days.
- Must successfully pass all phases of the pre-employment hiring process, including but not limited to, reference checks and a criminal background check.
