Headwaters Science Institute is hiring for lead and assistant mentors/educators for our after school programs in Richmond, CA for the spring 2024 semester. These instructors will be working with elementary school aged children through a student driven mini – research project, art activities and games. The programs run for about 14 weeks January-June, Monday-Thursday from about 2:00-6:00 at two local elementary schools in Richmond, CA. The pay is $22-24 an hour depending on experience.
Job Description:
To be a lead mentor/ educator one would need at least an associate degree and would have a background in science and ideally some familiarity working with children. Each day mentor/instructor Instructors will work with grade levels in one hour blocks to help groups create a testable research question, creating a hypothesis, creating a methods plan, collecting data, and analyzing said data and creating a discussion. This process will take place over the course of the semester. Supplemental activities will also occur to enhance the program. You should feel comfortable working with students in an outdoor setting. Rather than a wealth of knowledge around the specific project topic area, the most important attribute we are looking for is comfort building and executing scientific projects as well as the ability to help students do the same.
To be an assistant mentor/educator preferably we would like you to have a background in science, but it is not necessary and/or a familiarity or desire to work with children. The assistant educators/assistants will collaborate with the head mentors to facilitate the students’ self-driven mini research projects and provide support with behavior management. Additionally, the assistant instructors will distribute materials and assist with game instruction and participation. It is essential to possess a level of comfort working with students in an outdoor environment.
