RESEARCH ASSISTANT needed
with Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute
Working with Drs. Alynn Martin and SE Henke
We are looking for 1 student to assist with a SARS/CoV2 project. We will be sampling multiple species of mammals, collecting blood, swabs, and tissues, to investigate the prevalence of SARS/CoV2 in southern Texas.
Applicants must have:
- an interest in medicine, zoonotic diseases, and wildlife science.
- Willingness to trap and/or shoot animals
- Willingness to handle live animals
- Willingness to dissect animals and collect blood, bodily fluids, and tissues
- Willingness to work in extreme weather conditions (i.e., high temperatures and humidity, rain, etc.)
- Willingness to work weekends and evenings
- Willingness to travel throughout southern Texas (overnight stays will occur)
Past experience in the following is preferred:
- Trapping experience with Sherman and Havahart/Tomahawk traps
- Knowledge to correctly identify Texas mammal species
- Dissection experience
- Live animal handling
- Anesthesia experience; calculations of dosages, administering drugs
- Collecting blood
- Knowledge of tissues and their placement in the body
Work availability: mid-May through mid-August (~12 weeks)
Up to 40 hours / work week
Pay is $15/hr
